2 Indians Walk Into a Scientology and Dianetics Center

January 31st, 2008 Posted in randumbness by Roshan V.

Last night we were walking down Castro Street in downtown Mountain View, CA, when, while passing the creepy “Scientology and Dianetics” center, I noticed an older Indian couple sitting in the lobby (awaiting brainwashing?). I exclaimed, “What the?…OMG! Those are Indian people inside! GET OUT OF THERE!!!!!”

Hopefully they still have their sanity, and money, after last night’s session.

I actually know a few Scientologists. FWIW I’ve found them to be less evangelistic and more trustworthy IMHO than people I know that “are brainwashed by”/”put their faith into” more traditional Western religions. The majority of them keep to themselves and don’t bother anyone; I don’t find that a reason for intolerance.

I don’t want to imply that I am giving mainstream religions any more faith (pun not intended) than smaller ones, or that I am more (in)tolerant towards some and not others. I’m sure that Scientologists are less evangelistic than larger religions as well. However, to say that they don’t bother anyone is misleading - their complete demonization of psychiatry, not only drugs but the science in general, is in my opinion harmful to people who may need mental help. It is almost as bad mainstream religions preventing stem cell research or putting “intelligent design” on the same level as evolution. I think that regardless of what religion one subscribes to, if someone discounts science and intellectual reasoning in the name of their faith, I am highly suspect of them.

    I’ll amen to that.
